Tires aren't cheap, so it's important to take good care of them so that they last for as long as possible. These are a few things that you should avoid doing if you want to preserve your tires and keep them in good shape.

1. Driving With Misaligned Wheels

Over time, your wheels might become misaligned. This can be a problem because it can cause uneven wear and tear on your tires. If you notice that your vehicle seems to be "pulling" to the left or right when you're driving, it's important to take it to a mechanic to have your tires aligned. If you don't, you might find yourself paying for both an alignment and a new set of tires.

2. Not Rotating Your Tires

It's important to rotate your tires periodically throughout their lifespan so that they can all wear out evenly. This is critical since front and back tires can wear out at different times. A good rule of thumb is to have your tires rotated each time that you have your oil changed, but you can check with your tire manufacturer for the best recommendations for the set of tires on your vehicle, since they do vary.

3. Turning Your Wheels When Your Car Isn't in Motion

Your tires are designed to turn at an even rate. If you turn your steering wheel to make your wheels rub against the concrete or asphalt when the car is not in motion, it can cause uneven wear and tear on your tires. Similarly, doing burnouts can also cause unnecessary wear and tear on your tires, since it puts too much pressure on one part of the tire.

4. Not Keeping Them Properly Inflated

Keeping your car tires properly inflated at all times is important for everything from safety to gas mileage. Plus, tires that aren't inflated as they are supposed to be can be more prone to wearing out -- or even blowing out -- than tires with the right amount of air. Check the air in your tires each time that you fill up your tank; you should be able to find the proper air amount on the inside of your car door, and you can check it with a handheld gauge that you can purchase from an auto parts store, or you can use the gauge that is attached to the air pump at a convenience store.
